News This Week...

Good evening Kindergarten Families!  I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.  This week marks the official beginning of crazy holidays as our class prepares for Thanksgiving festivities, gingerbread fun, and Winter Holiday celebrations.
I also want to point out a few how ever-changing the weather is in Charlotte and some of our classroom procedures.  Please make sure you are sending your child to school in layers (and with a jacket or sweater).  Our classroom temperatures change almost as frequently as the weather outside as well.  =)
Unless it is raining, we will go outside for recess.  It is an important physical outlet for the children to go outside, get fresh air, and run around to expel energy.  My overall policy is that your child MUST wear their jacket if it is less than 40*.  In the temperatures are between 40* and 50* your child must have long sleeves.  I do not monitor attire for temperatures above 50* and do not force jackets for anything above 40*.  If your wishes are different than mine, please discuss your expectations with your child.  We use weather.com and discuss the weather, winds, temperature, etc. each morning and I check again before recess on colder days to remind the children about dressing for warmth.

With the crazy temperature changes (cold, hot, cold, hot) and beginning of the winter season, please make sure you are also keeping an eye on your child's hand washing to reduce the amount of germs and bacteria they come into contact with.  We've had several children out sick over the past week and sanitize our desks and cubbies weekly and keep a close watch on hand washing at school.  As a reminder, your child must be fever-free and vomit-free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school.  This means that if your child is sent home from school with a fever, he/she may not return the next day.  This is not to inconvenience you, but to reduce the amount of germs and sickness that spread around our school and classroom.

Student of the Week has started this week.  When it is your child's turn to be student of the week, he/she will bring home a board to decorate on Monday (to be returned Wednesday).  Then, the class will interview your child, write letters to your child, and your child will be the line leader all week.  On Friday, your child will take Mick home with a journal to record the fun adventures.  Claire is our first student of the week this week.  FYI, students are selected at random by pulling a stick from the name jar, but must display leadership qualities to be the leader of the class for the week.  More instructions and information go home the week your child is selected attached to the bulletin board.

As a reminder, it is the student's responsibility to pack and unpack their things each day (folder, reading folder, etc.).  Mrs. Kang and I continue to remind the class daily but it is their personal responsibility.  Please also make sure you or your child are writing in their reading log nightly.  This task becomes a child-centered task that is graded in 1st grade, so it is a good nightly habit to establish now so your child is prepared to the changes next year.  Reading folders are especially important now with our spelling words and change in literacy groups.

Speaking of spelling tests....
The children took their first spelling test Friday and did a fantastic job!  I have not graded them all, but I made sure they weren't all worked up over taking a test.  They worked hard and I am confident you will see it in their results.  I will have the tests graded and returned to you with the rubric ASAP.  Things got really busy today and I did not have a chance to get them ready for going home in folders today.  Thanks for your patience.  They will go home soon!

Don't forget that we will be having a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 25th.  Our feast will be from 1:30-3:00.  Please sign-up to bring an item.  It does not have to be traditional American Thanksgiving foods.  It can be any foods that are traditional for your family to eat and share over Thanksgiving or family gatherings.  Please list the item you plan to bring.  If you are joining us during the feast, please make note of that on the sign-up or email me to let me know.  This will allow me to have as many chairs and plates/utensils as are necessary for our guests.

We are going to begin our studies for Night of the Notables gradually this week and next week.  Your child may come home asking for information about their family members.  =)  Reminder that we are going to Imaginon Friday.  Please send books with your child, return at a library, or renew online.

Last week we worked on rhyming, -at, -ot, subtraction, reading for information, and nocturnal animal research while also reviewing many other skills from first quarter.

Have a wonderful week!!! Let me know if you need anything at all.  Don't forget that Tom Turkey projects are due Friday and should be child-created.  A spare turkey is below for those who need it.
