GRADING AND REPORTING SCALE AND INFORMATION
The grading scale description below is taken directly from the 2014-2015 Handbook. Please refer to these descriptions prior to contesting your child's grade in any area.

·        Curriculum for the Year
o   All school benchmarks have been adapted from the North Carolina Standard Course of study.  The direct benchmarks for Kindergarten can be found here
o   Language Arts
§  We use Junior Great Books as our curriculum the second semester of the year.
§  Junior Great Books is a program designed to integrate class discussions, dramatizations, creative writing, projects, and interpretive thinking.  A huge focus of the program is also reading comprehension.

o   Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)
§  This is the formal reading assessment I use to test your child’s reading fluency, decoding, and comprehension.
§  There are all kinds of resources for finding books at your child’s DRA level, including conversion charts.  Some of the best resources are:
o   Handwriting
§  I teach Zaner-bloser handwriting.  For more information: www.zaner-bloser.com
o   Phonics and Spelling
§  Weekly spelling words, DOLCH words, and vocabulary words have been derived from a culmination of various literacy, phonics, and spelling programs.  The school’s phonics program that is also used is All About Spelling.  Find more information at: http://allaboutlearningpress.com/all-about-spelling
o   Science
§  We use BSCS as supplemental science materials.  More information can be found at:  http://www.bscs.org/bscs-science-inquiry-approach
o   Mathematics
§  We use Everyday Mathematics as our math curriculum.

o   Social Studies
§  We will be reading Scholastic Weekly Readers to enhance our studies.

§  Wise Skills is the character education program that has been implemented at the school.  More information can be found at: http://www.wiseskills.com/
