A Few Weekly Happenings.... LOTS of December Information

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  My husband, dog, and I went to Savannah to visit my mom and dad for the duration of the break and we had a wonderful time together.  The shopping was great too! :)

I want to thank everyone who joined us for our classroom feast and also those who sent in items to cook with or food/drinks to share.  It was a wonderful experience for the kids to learn how to make place settings, host guests, etc. as well as how to prepare various foods.  One of the best life lessons was the hard work it takes to peel potatoes and make foods and be a participant in the process of the party rather than relying on parents to do all of the work (much like the Pilgrims and Native Americans shared the duties and work load).

I also have to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for the overwhelming support and generosity as a class for Baby Dey.  I was completely take aback by the surprise baby shower and feel so loved and blessed to have such amazing and supportive parents and students.  The class is really excited about the baby and I cannot thank everyone who contributed to the cake, diaper cake, gift card, and other surprises enough.  I can't wait to start this new chapter and feel so special to have the support and love of so many amazing people.  Thanks so much.

So.... news about this week and the subsequent weeks ahead (as much as possible).

We have begun our winter studies!  We are studying the various versions of the gingerbread man as well as winter holidays around the world.  If your family celebrates a specific holiday or custom from another country, please let me know so I can include it in our studies.  We study the various winter holidays from a historical perspective and use in social studies we compare/contrast the various similarities and differences that exist within the holidays.

Night of the Notables is next Thursday, December 11th.  The event will take place in the evening at school.  The purpose of the event was explained in the school's newsletter before break.  As a Kindergartener, it is not developmentally appropriate to have them study a notable person from history, because it is not relatable.  Instead, we are following our social studies curriculum and studying ourselves, families, and how we are the same and different from each other.  We will be doing self-studies about ourselves, our families, and backgrounds.  We will then be going to the retirement home next week and comparing/contrasting ourselves and our families to that of an elderly person.

We will be making and decorating gingerbread cookies in the next week or so with our 3rd grade buddies.  We will also do a craft and watch the Polar Express with them the week before break.  Already planning ahead.... we will be having our Winter Holidays party on Thursday, December 18th from 8:45-10:15am.  I will be posting a sign-up genius soon for that as well so we can have various foods and crafts from holidays around the world.  I will buy all of the craft supplies, popcorn, and cookie decorating supplies for our fun events with our buddies and the party.

On Friday, December 19th we will have a read-in where the kids will wear their PJs to school and we will spend the day reading and enjoying literature.  On this day we will have an optional book exchange.  More information to come in next week's newsletter regarding the read-in but if you'd like your child to participate keep your eyes out for a reasonably priced new book or for a book around your house you'd be willing to part with that is in like-new condition!

Have a great week.  Some emails went out today about the Polar Express/Gingerbread Field Trip as well as some holiday traditions in our classroom.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Have a wonderful week!
