Weekly News & Happenings

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I had family in town all 5 days of the break and we had a wonderful time together.  The shopping was great too! :)

So.... news about this week and the subsequent weeks ahead (as much as possible).

• We have begun our winter studies!  We are studying the various versions of the gingerbread man as well as winter holidays around the world.  If your family celebrates a specific holiday or custom from another country, please let me know so I can include it in our studies.  
• We are not having our Gingerbread/Polar Express field trip tomorrow (Dec. 4th).  That was an oversight on my part with planning in August.  We will have the trip on our last library trip before break, Weds. December 18th.  Tomorrow's trip will be a regular trip in the morning to Imaginon. 
• Night of the Notables is next Tuesday, December 10th.  The event will take place in the evening at school.  The purpose of the event was explained in the school's newsletter before break.  As a Kindergartener, it is not developmentally appropriate to have them study a notable person from history, because it is not relatable.  Instead, we are following our social studies curriculum and studying ourselves, families, and how we are the same and different from each other.  We will be doing self-studying about ourselves, our families, and backgrounds.  We will then be going to the retirement home next week and comparing/contrasting ourselves and our families to that of an elderly person.
• Next week I will be absent from school Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  I will be in Las Vegas visiting my family and friends.  Mrs. Kang will be my substitute.  If you need to communicate with her, please make sure to write a note in your child's folder or email her directly.  Her email is lkang@scholarsacademy.org but please keep in mind that email accounts are not always checked during the school day.
• We will be making and decorating gingerbread cookies on Friday with our 3rd grade buddies.  If you are able to send in supplies, please let me know by signing up here. 
• Already planning ahead.... we will be having our Winter Holidays party on Thursday, December 19th from 8:45-10:15am.  I will be posting a sign-up genius soon for that as well so we can have various foods and crafts from holidays around the world.  Here is the sign-up for this as well.  I am only asking for the food dishes.  I will be providing all craft materials.
