Weekly News!

Last Week:

Skills:
Last week though it was a short week, was BUSY!  We covered the "R" blends (BR, CR, DR, FR, GR, PR, TR), nouns and proper nouns.  In math, we learned about odd and even numbers and reviewed time.  During social studies we talked about maps, Martin Luther King Jr., Ruby Bridges and Rosa Parks.  In science we discussed polar bears and compared them to penguins.

Field Trip:

Last week as you know we went to the Nature Museum.  Thank you to ALL the chaperons!!! The kids saw Grandfather Tree, animals of the forest and got to explore a little in nature.

Report Cards:

I wanted to send out a friendly reminder...report cards are going home Friday in your child's daily folder.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your child's report card after looking at the benchmarks on the school's website.  Don't be overly concerned if your child did not receive a "3" in certain areas and please remember that a "4" is very rare and extremely hard to achieve.  A "3" indicates mastery while a "2" is still a GOOD grade.  Based on the standards, a grade of a "2" means that you are progressing in your learning and education, but you have some minor errors or misconceptions that you need to fix before you have reached full mastery.  A grade of a "2" means that you are grasping the material.  Mastery (a "3") means that at any given time I can ask you a question and you can answer it correctly.  Not everyone is there yet, and that is OK!  If your child received a "1" please read through the explanation as to why on the progress report.

100th Day Project Information:

PLEASE DO NOT START UNTIL AFTER THE 100TH DAY!!!!  I will explain the project to the students this Friday.  I just wanted to give you a 'heads up.'

The 100th day of school is a fun day full of math and literacy activities related to the number 100.  The students will also learn how to count to 100 in various ways.  After the 100th day, I am going to assign a project related to the 100th day of school.  Details of the projects are below.

100th Day of School Project:

Students need to make something (anything) to depict the number 100.  This can be as simple or complex as the student wants and as creative and open-ended as the student wishes.  Here are some ideas based on what students have done in the past:
  • Collect 100 of the same item and glue them to a poster board
  • Collect 100 different items and glue them to a poster board
  • Make a book with 100 drawings, pictures or glued items
  • Make a t-shirt with 100 buttons, bows, ribbons, etc
  • Cut out your handprint 100 times and create a mural, picture, etc
  • String 100 noodles, beans, beads, etc onto a necklace
  • Make a video of 100 consecutive movements (jumping rope, using a pogo stick, doing jumping jacks, etc.)
Feel free to use one of the ideas above or come up with a new way of portraying the number 100 with your child.  MOST IMPORTANTLY.....THIS IS A PROJECT THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO CREATE and their grade is based on working INDEPENDENTLY!!!!

Be creative and have fun!

Projects are due to School by Friday, February 14th!

**If your child finishes sooner, please feel free to send it in early**
**Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have!!**

Imaginon Books:

We will be going to Imaginon on Friday - please have your kids bring their books this week.  IF there are outstanding fees, please put the money in their daily folder and we will pay the fees on Friday.

Next Week:

We will be going to the Schiele Museum next Tuesday ALL DAY.  We have 5 chaperons (2 that are allowed on the bus.)  The 3 chaperons that can not ride the bus can either follow the bus or meet us there.

Misc. Items:

I continue to get notes about children forgetting books, reading folders, jackets, etc.  Please continue to bear with us as we TRY and teach independence.  We DO give gentle reminders daily and sometimes to very specific children about certain items that are being left.  IF your child does forget something and remembers at dismissal, it is our classroom rule that children are NOT allowed to go back to the classroom. This has been a classroom rule from the very beginning of school.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.

I know this seems like a LOT of information...SORRY!  If you have any questions, please let me know either through daily folders or email.
