Good morning Kindergarten Families!
I wanted to wait until grading and reporting was explained in full before sending any work home with your child. As I explained last night, I am a firm believer that children learn through experiences and play, so we do not do a lot of paper and pencil work. Additionally, the work that we do may be in a writing or math journal, used to display in the halls, or placed in your child's portfolio.
I want you to be as aware as possible about your child's progress and grades, so I assure you that you will remain continually informed and have ample opportunities to see their work as they progress through the school year.
Today your child will have several papers in his/her folder. Two of them do not have grades on them because they are pre-assessments for writing and math. These papers are typically kept in your child's portfolio, but I would like for you to see them before they are filed away. Please review them and return them to school. =)
The third paper is a language arts grade from Monday. We read 2 books about signs and discussed what they mean, how they are read, etc. The book had a transportation theme but we focused on the skill inference. When the students received the poem, I read it aloud to them. To earn a 3, they were to color the color words and circle the definitions in the same color. We reviewed the correct answers and students were given time to copy my paper from the board. To earn a 4, students were asked to infer what the poem mean and illustrate it correctly (stop light). To earn a 2 or 1, your child did not color the words, circle the words, etc. to complete the assignment.
Please let me know if you have any questions and please return portfolio papers to me. The pre-assessment writing and math will be reviewed at parent-teacher conferences with developmental rubrics and core expectations for the school year. Thanks!
**Mint Museum permission slips went home yesterday. The cost for the trip is $1.00. This is an Art field trip, so the money is separate from classroom trips ($108 pay in full total). If you returned your child's permission slip today without money, we have left the slip in his/her folder until the money is turned in as well. Thanks!
