We LOVE to cook!

Yes... you read it correctly... we LOVE to cook!  So far this year we have cooked a variety of things.  We have made pancakes and graphed the types of syrup we liked.  We made salt dough and made/painted transportation magnets.  And today we made individual apple pies!  When we cook in our class, the children are in charge!  They have to read the recipe and follow the directions, choose and measure the ingredients, and create the process from start to finish!  They even clean their areas when they are finished and bus their own dishes!

So far, we are having a BLAST with our cooking adventures and I appreciate all of the ingredient donations from families.  We wouldn't be able to make these amazing products without your support!

Below are the recipes, in case you'd like to cook at home.  They will also be included in each child's memory book that they receive at the end of Kindergarten (shh... it's a surprise for the kids!) as well as the pictures taken during these adventures.  Because each child makes their own product, recipes are for 1 serving.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Pancakes
2 TBS water
1/4 cup flour
2 tsp butter, melted
2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp paking soda
pinch of salt
*Mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a coffee mug.  Add melted butter and mix.  Add water and mix thoroughly.  Microwave on high for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes.

Salt Dough
4 TBS flour
2 TBS salt
2 TBS warm water
*Mix all together, adding water last.  Create anything and let air dry.

Apple Pies
Pie Crust:
2 TBS sugar
2 TBS Butter
2 tsp water
1/3 cup flour
pinch salt
*Mix together, set aside

Pie Filling:
1 apple, cored, sliced, and peeled
2 TBS sugar
pinch cinnamon
pinch salt
*Put in a bowl or cup and mash together.  Some liquid will form.

*Once both the crust and filling have been made in separate bowls, divide the crust in half.  Put 1/2 in a greased muffin pan or dish and press down.  Fill with apples.  Flatten the other 1/2 of the dough and place on top of the apples. Bake at 350 until crust is brown.

We use an apple peeler/corer that I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond to peel and slice the apples.  They can also be found through Pampered Chef.  Below is a picture.

Next week we will not be cooking anything, but instead will be learning about space and pretending to be astronauts in honor of National Space Week!  Please check MRSAEvents to sign-up to send something in!
